When Should You Get an Oral Cancer Screening?

Oral cancer may sound frightening, but it is treatable if detected early. Many people are unsure about when to get screened, but understanding why screening is important can help you make informed decisions.

This guide explains when to get an oral cancer screening, the signs indicating an urgent need for checkups, and why working with a dentist is recommended.

When to Go for an Oral Cancer Screening

The ADA recommends dentists perform a conventional visual and tactile examination (CVTE) for all adult patients at routine visits—there’s no minimum age threshold. However, it’s a good idea to detect the warning signs before it’s too late. Book promptly if you notice any of the following for more than 2–3 weeks:

• Ulcer or sore that doesn’t heal in ~2–3 weeks
• Red/white patches, unexplained bleeding, lump in the mouth/neck
• Persistent pain, numbness, difficulty swallowing or speaking, voice changes, ear pain

Teens and Young Adults

Risk increases with age, but younger adults—especially with HPV exposure—can also be affected. Experts suggest getting oral cancer screenings when you turn 18 or visit your first adult dentist. At this age, teens may develop habits like smoking, affecting their oral health. Screening helps start prevention early and alerts you to risks.

Adulthood

At ages 20 to 40, adults should go for regular dental checkups. The frequency of these visits depends on their dentist’s recommendation, since they know their patients’ oral health history. Most dentists include an oral-cancer screening automatically during your routine checkup, so no special request is needed.

Midlife or Above 40

The risk of oral cancer rises with age; the average age at diagnosis is ~64, though ~1 in 5 cases occur under 55. Those who skip regular dental visits increase their risk of suspicious lesions going undetected.​

Who Is at High Risk for Oral Cancer Screening?

The following factors increased the incidence of oral cancer:

• Heavy tobacco or alcohol users need regular, early screenings.
• A history of HPV infection increases the risk of oral cancer, especially in the oropharynx.
• Frequent sun exposure increases the risk of lip cancer.
• If you notice the warning signs mentioned earlier, report them to your dentist. They may indicate oral cancer, so thorough screening helps rule out the disease.​
• A family history of oral or other cancers means you are potentially at higher risk and need regular screenings.
